The Pharcyde & Souls Of Mischief

STRICTLY OVER 18s

South Central legends, The Pharcyde, emerged from the bustling LA hip hop scene of the early ‘90s. Their album, Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde, was heralded as a new and fresh departure from their gangster rap predecessors on the West Coast, bringing some welcome humour and eccentricity that paved the way for the likes of Jurassic 5 and the Hieroglyphics collective.

The Pharcyde, featuring Imani, Fatlip and Slimkid3, will be joined on the night by Souls of Mischief, another West Coast outfit who continued a legacy of alternative US hip hop and make this a rare double bill in Cork of true instigators.

Chamber Choir Ireland presents In Paradisum at Saint Fin Barre’s Cathedral

THIS CONCERT IS TAKING PLACE AT SAINT FIN BARRE’S CATHEDRAL

One of Arvo Pärt’s most celebrated interpreters, Hillier opens with the subtle unfolding of O Holy Father Nicholas—composed for the re-opening of St Nicholas’ church at Ground Zero. Destroyed in the September 11th terrorist attacks, the church has now been reborn as a shrine for pilgrims of all religions from all over the world.

With just four movements, Rhona Clarke’s Requiem omits judgement and embraces perpetual light, eternal rest, and redemption. Finally, Caroline Shaw’s mesmerising How to fold the wind, inspired by origami, uses speech, inhaled notes, wordless melodies and innovative vocal effects to fold individual voices together into a complex whole.

Programme:
O Holy Father Nicholas — Arvo Pärt (Estonia, b. 1935)
Requiem — Rhona Clarke (Ireland, b. 1958)
How to Fold the Wind — Caroline Shaw (USA, b. 1982)

The Scratch – Guinness Cork Jazz Festival

STRICTLY OVER 18s

Dublin quartet The Scratch are set to release their James Vincent McMorrow produced album, Mind Yourself, on November 3. The first taste of this diverse and thrilling collection, Trom II- A Slip in the Wind, can be heard now.

The Scratch are a four-piece band that sound like no one else you’ve ever heard before, featuring Conor Dockery (guitar, backing vocals), Cathal McKenna (bass/backing vocals), Daniel Lang (cajón, percussion, lead vocals), and Jordan O’Leary (guitar, lead vocals). Like all the great progressive musicians, they turn music on its head and pour their hearts and souls into their art to forge something original and new.

Musicians making the time-honoured leap from acoustic to electric are well-documented, but The Scratch did it the other way round. Prior to The Scratch, they were a “full-blown metal band” called Red Enemy, who released an album and toured the UK and US. After Red Enemy fizzled out, they swapped the electric axes and amps for acoustics. The fledgling band found their feet jamming in their kitchen, creating freewheeling, intrepid music, which is laced with humour, honesty, devilment, and an overwhelmingly positive spirit, refreshingly free from the constraints of a recording studio or rehearsal room.

SFSH X Seanie Buttons Presents… Pretty Happy + Spit

STRICTLY OVER 18s

Pretty Happy is a 3-piece sister-brother-best friend art-punk band from Cork known for intense theatrical live performances and embracing the idioms and energy of their home city. Off stage, Pretty Happy like to engage in other artforms including directing their own music videos, curating festivals, running their own venue and directing and producing feature length documentaries. In late 2022 they released their debut vinyl EP Echo Boy on the Foggy Notions label to great acclaim with intensive airplay on UK radio, a European tour supporting Kim Gordon, UK tour dates with Preoccupations and various other creative projects. At the end of the year The Irish Times voted Pretty Happy number 8 best Irish Group and number 9 Best Song for ‘Boots’. The band are currently working on their debut album due for release in 2024 and running the Seanie Buttons Presents… nights at Cork Opera House.

Special guests are Spit, a punk band from somewhere in Ireland, fronted by all three members and backed into a corner. They made music both screeching and soft from serrated notation and apocalyptic drumming. Their music is an atonal affront on the well trodden ground we’ve all paid enough admission to hear. Where most music soars, Spit wallows.

SFSH X Seanie Buttons Presents… Elaine Malone + Nudy Boy Nature

STRICTLY OVER 18s

Pyrrhic is Malone’s highly anticipated debut album, coming out on September 8th with Pizza Pizza Records, available for pre-order now.

Named for pyrrhic victory, Malone’s highly charged record examines the notion of spoils won at too high a price. Spanning from wall of sound shoegaze, sailing vocals and ominous guitars, Pyrrhic marks a turning point of Malone’s maturity as a songwriter and composer, departing from the subtle compositions of her debut EP ‘Land’ and achieving an ambitious scale of song. Featuring the talents of long-time collaborator Sam Clague (Crying Loser) and the dynamic rhythm section of James Christie (The Bonk) and Ruairí Dale. Pyrrhic was recorded in Cork city in December 2021 by Cathal MacGabhann of The Altered Hours and mixed by Sam Clague.

Nudy Boy Nature is a project lead by drummer / guitarist and songwriter James Christie. It began as a home recording interest borne out of his love for DIY and outsider art. To cite a few notable influences, The Mothers of Invention, R Stevie Moore, The Kinks, Elliott Smith and Of Montreal. The live show is made up of some of Cork’s finest musicians.

Seanie Buttons Presents… The Altered Hours

STRICTLY OVER 18s

The Altered Hours are a rock group based in Cork city, Ireland. Their music explores vast psychedelic spaces, immediate post-punk tones, repetitive rhythms and propelling structures. The lyrics bind this wall of noise together, comfortably connecting the escapism of the abstract with the honestly of realism. This duality is played out in song and on stage by the male/female lead singers Elaine Howley & Cathal MacGabhann alongside Patrick Cullen on bass guitar/effects and Nora Lewon on drums. Continuing an ‘art-punk’ tradition while being influenced by artists such as The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Pixies, Iceage, Lydia Lunch, Spacemen 3 & Stereolab.

The band most recently joined fellow Irish rockers Fontaines D.C on a major European tour, playing sold out venues such as Le Bataclan (Paris) & Paradiso (Amsterdam). The Altered Hours are now back in the studio putting the final touches to what will be their third full length album. The past few years the 5 piece have been headlining tours in the UK & Europe, creating what some journalists have described as a ‘cult-like’ status. Playing everywhere from ex-government buildings, deconsecrated churches, sheds, parties & anywhere else that will have them. Anton Newcombe (Brian Jonestown Massacre) invited them to record in his studio in Berlin in 2012 which resulted in a 10” vinyl being released on his label. The years ahead are set to be as exciting & energetic as ever for The Altered Hours with the group continuously carving out their own path in rock ‘n’ roll.
